Consul General Mme. LU Xu's remarks at the online gala in celebration of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China
2021-10-01 05:47

Families and friends,

Good evening!

It is a pleasure to celebrate together the birthday of the People's Republic of China.

In the past 72 years, China has experienced dramatic and historic changes. In 1949, China had a GDP per capita of only about 20 Canadian Dollars with shortages of goods and production capacity lagging behind. It had even no capacity to produce daily necessities like matches and soap bars. Today, China has grown into the world's second-largest economy, contributing an average of 30% to world economic growth for years.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. As the CPC celebrating its centenary on July 1st this year, General Secretary Xi Jinping solemnly declared that through the continued efforts of the whole Party and the entire nation, China has realized the first centenary goal of building a moderate prosperous society and has brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty. With confidences and hopes, it is now marching towards the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects.

The past 72 years have also witnessed China's remarkable achievements in culture, sports, and other fields. In 2008, China successfully hosted the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, where athletes from all over the world pursued "One Dream" in "One World". In 126 days, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will unveil and Beijing will be remembered in history as the world's first "City for Two Olympics".

In the face of challenges by COVID-19, the Chinese Government has fulfilled its commitment by taking the lead in outbreak containment and economic recovery to safeguard favourable conditions for holding the Winter Olympic Games, while actively advancing event preparation. At present, all venues have been completed, event organization and venue operations are in order, and services and security are speeding up.

Canada is in the leading position in snow and ice sports and Calgary had rich experiences hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics. Just as Calgarians called for "Come Together in Calgary", I hereby call for "Come Together in Beijing" for being Higher, Faster and Stronger.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of the celebration.
